I woke up to the sounds of birds crying overhead and the soft metallic cling of halyards banging against sailboat masts. The water created a slight rocking motion that had lulled me to sleep the night before. Climbing out of the hull, the harbor around me was breaking with sunshine, boats on one side and the gray/brown clapboard buildings on the other.
On my first road trip to visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I decided to fully embrace the spirit of the place, which revolves around water, by spending a night on a boat. We docked right at the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island — steps away from the restaurants and shops of the town, as well as one of my favorite spots there, the Full Moon Cafe & Brewery.
